Last summer the DRNC planted 38 native oak trees along the Bike Path: 33 Channel Island Oak and 5 Valley Oak. The results are very encouraging. In addition, the Council replaced trash can lids and currently plan to improve shrubbery. Stay tuned for details
The trees we planted are:
Quercus Lobotus (5) and Quercus Tomantella (32).
These are more commonly known as Valley Oak (that is native to the CA central valley, and in Los Angeles), and the Channel Island Oak (native to the Channel Islands of SoCal.)
We are planning on planting the path with other natives to Southern CA (though, no more trees) including:
Toyon or Christmas Berry 20
Purple Sage 25
Yankee Point Lilac 20
Mountain Lilac 20
Lemonade Berry 20
St. Catherine's Lace 10
Santa Cruz Buckwheat 20
Hayes Iva 10
Brickellbush 5
Tree Lilac 3
Monkey Flower 2
Narrowleaf CA Fuchsia 9
These natives will not only enhance the natural beauty of our bike path, but demonstrate to the city and to the community our commitment to responsible stewardship of resources through planting low water need native plants, and provide educational opportunities for school children to learn about the native ecology.
